First time entry into the Bald Archy Prize - 2019

Updated: Feb 26, 2023

I have created this artwork of Tony Abbott as an entry into this year's Bald Archy Prize.

Tony Abbott - Coke Head: addicted to the 'Coal Face' and putting the Coal in Coalition.

The dead light in his eyes is a reflection of bleached coral.

Former PM, Mr Abbott is one of a core group of pro-coal coalition members who are not wavering in their support of the fossil fuel – a continued position that will ensure: destruction of the environment, loss of its youth support base and will undermine any future Liberal leaders who may attempt to negotiate solutions such as investment in renewables or climate change policies.

Mixed Media, including the handmade frame.

62 x 47 cm

Created in 1994 as a spoof of that more serious competition, the Bald Archy Prize provides artists of all styles and standards with a genuine opportunity, ranging from the hilarious to the bizarrely vulgar, to create portrait paintings of humour, dark satire, light comedy or caricature.

Now known internationally as the only art competition in the world to be judged by a sulphur-crested cockatoo named Maude, the satirical side of this event has its basis in the irreverent, larrikin Australian comic comment, with great appeal to people from all walks of life, the reason why the exhibition of finalists keeps breaking attendance records wherever it is shown.

I have been chosen as a finalist and you can view my artwork from 8th February at the Watson Arts Centre in Canberra (and vote for People's Choice) or as the exhibition travels up and down the East Coast of Australia.

My portrait has also received a bit of coverage in the City News!

Given the subject matter, I'm glad that Maude the Cockatoo is judging the main winner and not Batey!

I should point out that the mixed media and frame are not made of actual petroleum coke / coal as reported - rather I just used techniques to make to look like it.
