Unsuccessful entry into Napier Waller Prize 2019

Updated: Oct 14, 2019

'ANZAC Riders'

2019

Scratchboard 41 cm x 51 cm

This was my artwork for entry into this year's Napier Waller Art Prize at the Australian War Memorial.

Unfortunately this year I was not shortlisted. :-(

Artist Statement:

Being a dual citizen and having served in the defence forces of both New Zealand and Australia, I was moved to learn in 2015 that a "100 years, 100 horses" re-enactment ride was being organised in my home town for the centenary of the Gallipoli landings; to remember the men and horses sent to the front with the Canterbury Mounted Rifles, and never came home.

100 riders participated in this anniversary ride, including current serving members of the NZDF and ADF.

52 riders dressed in full military uniform to represent the 52 soldiers from the North Canterbury region who didn't return home.

The NZ Mounted Rifles (re-enactment group) often partner up with the Gundagai 7th Light Horse Troop for commemorative events and provision of equine therapy for veterans, which inspired the subject matter for this artwork. Both teams have also been involved in providing 'Equine Rehab' programs to support ex serving members and work alongside specialist rural mental health teams in providing horse therapy.

This scratchboard artwork is the largest I have completed, since learning the technique last year, and took two months to complete.

I love how scratchboard highlights the contrasting light and detailed textures of the animals. It is an unforgiving medium - so I continually concentrate on softening my style. Scratchboard provides an excellent method for practising patience and mindfulness.
